Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos (Maingano, Melanochromis sp. 'Maingano')
A small, aggressive Malawian cichlid that exhibits little sexual dimorphism. Both sexes are dark blue with lighter blue longitudinal bands. Females have pale bellies and shorter pelvic fins when compared to the males.
Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos was formerly known as Melanochromis sp. 'Maingano' (often misspelled as "Manigano").
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A very feisty species; although males do not hold territories, they are constantly bickering over their position in the hierarchy within the aquarium. Do not mix with other members of its genus or other cichlids with similar longitudinal stripes.
Largely carnivorous, wild fish feed extensively on zooplankton, insect larvae and other small animals.
In the wild males will try to monopolise groups of females. Males play no role in rearing the offspring though. Females mouthbrood the eggs and fry for about three weeks, after which point the fry should be removed and reared with brine shrimp nauplii and liquid fry foods. Females should be isolated from males for a while so that they can recover lost weight (they cannot feed while incubating eggs or fry).
