Osphronemus laticlavius (Giant Red Tail Gourami)
Although a peaceful, tolerant fish this giant gourami can only be kept in jumbo tanks. It is a friendly, easy to tame animal and only does well when kept with similarly placid animals such as pacu, plecs, and garpikes.
Juveniles are completely different to the adults, being attractively patterned with stripes and a distinct eye-spot near the tail. They have a pointed, slightly upturned snout. Adults are essentially brownish or pinkish, and the stripes and eye-spot are much less distinct. The head becomes rounded. Males and females are similar, but males do have longer, more pointed fins. As the common name suggests, unlike common giant gouramis, these fish have dorsal, tail, and anal fins that are darker and edged with red or orange.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Completely peaceful towards other fish they can be aggressive amongst themselves.
Due to their large size these fish are rarely bred by aquarists. They are bubblenest builders, with the male looking after the eggs until the fry are free-swimming.
