Scleromystax barbatus (Bearded Corydoras, Corydoras barbatus)
A large, robust species similar to Corydoras in most ways but better suited to fairly large aquaria where they will have adequate swimming space and preferably soft sand for burrowing into. Scleromystax barbatus is sexually dimorphic. Males have more complex markings, a golden stripe along the snout, and bristles on the cheeks.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Scleromystax barbatus is similar to typical Corydoras in most ways, but it is a subtropical fish and prefers lower temperatures. It naturally inhabits coastal creeks with very soft (<3dH), slightly acidic (~pH 6) water and requires similar conditions for breeding. Otherwise adaptable and not difficult to care for. Feeding and breeding is essentially similar to that of Corydoras. Choose peaceful tankmates that will do well at the slightly lower than normal temperatures required, for example danios and subtropical barbs.
