Parachanna africana (Niger Snakehead, African Snakehead)

Basically brown with distinctive forwards-pointing chevrons along the flanks. A longitudinal band runs from the upper jaw through the eye as far back as the gill covers. The underside is pale. Lower jaw slightly longer than the upper jaw. In breeding condition these fish turn almost completely black save for a golden band on the side of the head. No reliable sex differences are known, though females are likely rounder about the belly.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Territorial loners that are best kept in their own tank, but could be mixed with robust catfish and large midwater barbs.

Feeding is not problematic; live foods are favoured, but frozen foods will be taken. Recommended food items include river shrimps, earthworms, chunky seafood, whitebait and lancefish.

Breeding occasionally reported in the aquarium. The eggs float to the surface of the water where the male guards them. The fry are protected by the male until they are free swimming.
