Champsochromis caeruleus (Malawi Trout, Haplochromis thola)

A big predatory species with a tapreing but robust head. Males are steely blue with yellowish fins, females yellowy-brown.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Whilst large and predatory, this fish is not especially aggressive and can be kept with other robust fish of comparable size. It is a maternal mouthbrooder, but owing to its adult size, captive breeding is relatively rare. Wild fish feed primarily on smaller fish particularly the cyprinids known as lake sardines, Engraulicypris. In captivity, these fish will eat most foods including shrimp, earthworms, and once settled in, flakes and pellets. Given its size, only suitable for large aquaria with excellent filtration.
