Striuntius lineatus (Striped Barb, Lined Barb)

Lineatus translates to 'lined' in Latin, hence the common name 'lined barb'.

These fish stand out for their typically small size, bold colours, gregariousness and activity.

These wonderful barbs thrive in a heavily planted set up with a soft sand-like substrate, dim lighting, loose leaves, roots and branches. The necessity for a dense aquatic vegetation is because their natural habitat is quite often peat swamps or other still waters usually containing submerged grass and lots of vegetation.

Barbs generally need ample swimming room due to their activity levels being high. Therefore, it is important to note that while they require a heavily planted tank, it is best to keep the thickly planted areas in the sides, at the back and in the corners whilst keeping the front and middle area relatively open.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Barbs are easy to feed and will take all manner of live, frozen and prepared food. Barbs are omnivorous and enjoy both live food, frozen food, vegetable matter (eg squashed peas.)

Because barbs are usually active and boisterous, tank mates should be considered carefully. Many slower moving and long-finned fishes e.g Siamese fighting fish or guppies, are not always suitable.
