Hymenochirus boettgeri 'platinum' (Platinum African Dwarf Frog, Dwarf Clawed Frog)

This species is one of the most popular of all underwater frogs. The Dwarf Clawed Frog, Hymenochirus boettgeri, has been bred as an ornamental animal for years (available in various colours.) Both adults and tadpoles are classed as predatory suction feeders.

An amusing, hardy little frog that never comes out on land. For this reason, it is quite a popular aquarium novelty, and can be kept with fishes that are not so big that they pose a threat to the frog.

Also it is best to avoid nippy or aggressive species, like tiger barbs or dwarf cichlids. Likewise, very small fish, particularly livebearer fry, will be eaten by this frog. Properly cared for, these frogs will live for many years.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Platinum African Dwarf Frogs are small, playful characters are sociable and therefore do well in small groups. Only the males will sing and they can mate throughout the year.

Breeding isn't common in home aquaria, but possible. Because of their small size, sexing them is tricky. Mating takes place at night and can last several hours. Once the female has laid all the eggs, she will signal the male by going motionless.

It is best to keep them in relatively low water height, this is due to their desire of darting to the water surface for gulps of air (which can be affected in higher tanks.)

They love frozen or live bloodworm and brine shrimp.
