Apistogramma cacatuoides 'Double Red' (Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid)

Wild-type fish have a pinkish-green body with a thick horizontal band running from behind the eye to the base of the tail. An oblique band runs through the eye to base of the pelvic fins.

Males sport red and black marked dorsal and tail fins and greatly extended fin rays on the dorsal and tail fins. From this comes their common name, "cockatoo cichlid". Females are often more yellowy and lack the extended fin rays.

Various artificial forms exist, including the Double Red with red dorsal and tail fins marked with black spots. The Triple Red is similar but the anal fin is red/black as well. The Orange Flash has solid orange fins without any markings on them.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Despite their small size, these fish can be aggressive, especially when breeding. Best kept alone in an aquarium around 60 cm long, thickly planted with Java fern and Java moss, and with a few flower pots or coconut shells for caves.

A relatively easy fish to breed. Spawning takes place inside caves, with the female tending the eggs and the male staying a small distance away keeping the spawning site safe. The eggs hatch after a couple of days, and once free swimming, the fry will eat newly hatched brine shrimp and other small live foods.
