Hypsophrys nicaraguensis (Cichlasoma nicaraguensis, Theraps nicaraguensis)
Colouration is variable, but the dark line running along the midline of the flank, with a central black blotch, is distinctive. Basic colour is blue around the head and fins, and orange on the flanks and tail. On males the scales have dark edges causing a net-like pattern to be visible on flanks. Females are smaller and less strongly coloured, but still attractive fish.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
One of the milder Central American cichlids, and also one of the most beautiful. Basic care is easy provided it is given space and the correct water chemistry. It isn't overtly aggressive but it is territorial, and is best kept in a spacious tank as a small group. An omnivore, this fish eats algae, soft plants, organic detritus, insect larvae, snails, etc.
Easy to breed, this fish can be spawned in the same way as other Central American cichlids such as convicts.
