Trichogaster trichopterus - opaline (Opaline Gourami)

A distinctive and popular morph of the blue gourami. Overall colour is blue (though some yellow forms exist) and instead of three spots on the flanks there is a dark squiggle running from about halfway along the body to the tail.

They can get quite large so beware when choosing them for a community tank. One other point to bear in mind is that they can become something of a bully as they get larger especially towards smaller fish. It is better to keep them with fish of a similar size which will help to prevent this behaviour.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

These are not too difficult to breed. At maturity females become deeper and much thicker than the male. The dorsal fin on males tends to be longer and more pointed.

The breeding tank should be well stocked with plants because the male when ready will build a bubble nest and he will entice the female underneath it and eventually spawning activity shouldtake place. The eggs will float up to the nest. After spawning the female should be removed and once the eggs have hatched the male can also be removed. The fry should be free swimming in around three days when they can be fed on the usual fry foods such as infusoria and baby brine shrimp.
